When it comes to defining career success the truth is that each one of us is different. One person may define career success as making a six-figure salary while someone else may define it as making a difference. In fact, it really doesn’t matter how you define it.

The truth of it all is that if you’re serious about achieving professional success then there is one thing that you must do and that is set clear realistic goals for yourself and your career.

Goal setting is one of the key things that sets those who “make” things happen from those who simply “wish” things would happen.

Setting career goals doesn’t have to be difficult. It just takes a little thought, some planning, and a little imagination.

Here are some tips to help you get started setting those goals so that you can achieve real success.
Your Goals Need to Be Specific
When setting goals for your career one of the most important things for you to make sure you do is set both detailed and specific goals. The reason for this is that the more detailed and specific you can be about your goals the greater chance you will of achieving them. For example, it’s not just enough to say, “I want to get a promotion”, a more specific goal would be “I want to be promoted as an executive here in our marketing department with a 20% pay increase.

Your Goals Need to Be Realistic
There is a difference between just setting any old goals and setting realistic ones. Realistic goals are goals that you stand a strong chance of achieving based upon variables like your experience, your skills, education, abilities, skills, and resources.

One of the main reasons for this is that setting a timeframe to achieve your goals gives you some accountability and helps you stay focus on the task at hand.

For example, if your goal is to go back to school and finish your degree, set a specific timeframe such as I will go back to school this year and finish my degree within the next two years.

You Need to Be Committed to Your Goals
The absolute most important thing to consider when setting realistic goals for your career is that you need to be 100% committed to achieving those goals. This is paramount because in on the road to career success you will most certainly face many setbacks, challenges, and obstacles that if you’re not careful can demotivate and prevent you from making your goals a reality.
